it's been too late to get into competitive melee for 10 years because everyone who's in it is already better than you and always will be
again, my original post was a joke

also some thoughts: getting into melee nowadays, not like just playing with friends, is really stupid because the game is super old and 2 others have been out for a while
thats pretty defeatist. also the other two games arent really like melee so its not like a perfect switch or whatever

See this was ALWAYS my view on Melee, it's WAY too late to even try to play seriously.
not really
Like it would take many dedicated years to even become a somewhat known player and by then everyone you would've surpassed has probably gotten far further than they were.
the people at the top inherently improve much slower. the best players have paved the way for you to improve already, because they discovered everything for you already.
Like the game to me is fine, if you strictly enjoy competing and enter tournaments seriously for that reason it's fine, but unlike other e-sports in general, you almost can't get to the top level without 5+ years,
csgo, starcraft, any traditional fighter, to name a few. every good esport has a high skill ceiling
Leffen is the only player that even comes to mind that's gone far further than anyone else in a "short" amount of time, and he's a rare case of someone being as good as he is with the time dedicated despite it being more than 5 years
honestly i completely disagree. most of the veteran players have stagnated in their skill for the most part (see: chillin, hugs, kels)
also PPMD is fairly new, he got to a top level in less time than Leffen iirc

meaning normally you'd probably have to play like 7-8+.

i think its completely realistic for most people, given enough effort, to approach top player status. its gonna take like 4 years minimum but thats pretty good turnaround compared to other esports and actual sports.

also, its not like you play melee to solely become the best. competing is still fun
Pm>melee
i think PM has too many matchups

more matchups means you can only devote so much time to learning each one. the game is less deep as a result

i cant even read this

melee should've been dead a long time ago but people keep clinging on to it like it's the best game ever shot out of nintendo's dirty starfish
like the game's from 2001. move on already

also in 4 years it's going to be 2020
just think about that for a moment

why would you move on when it is without a doubt THE BEST game in the series??

limited character choice, super old, newer releases
i give melee 1 year max before it goes out of style
honestly if people are still clinging on to this game in 2017 i'll attempt to eat a hat
expected replies: but the DEPTH eh so COMPETITIVE

i think there's a reason people have been playing melee for 15 years already. do you honestly think nostalgia is entirely why? that makes no sense. its just an amazing fighting game.

the game being old means nothing to how fun it is/how deep it can go. there are still people playing street fighter 2, thats how loving good that game is. the difference being that street fighter actually got sequels that resemble a fighting game rather than what melee got.
limited character choice,
less matchups = more depth. look at starcraft 2; the meta was super in depth because there are only 3 race choices
super old,
???? so?
newer releases
games that barely resemble melee at all

dont know what to tell you man. its been 15 years and the game has more entrants than ever. i don't understand how you, being completely unfamiliar with the scene, are so confident in your prediction. there is no evidence of a downward trend in tournament attendance, locals are bigger than ever. the four biggest ever melee tournaments (in terms of attendance) were in 2015.
honestly if people are still clinging on to this game in 2017 i'll attempt to eat a hat
if i could be assed to remember this i would take you up on that

"predicting" legitimate counterarguments doesn't make them wrong

i don't even play melee and i know it's still got a huge competitive scene, that's undeniable

i dont really like discussing this kinda thing because people get all upset over it

melee is more in depth yes, however there are only three real good characters (fox, falco, marth) my favorite thing about pm was how the deadvelopment team wanted to balance everyone, ganondorf, bowser, and dedede are actually playable, they aren't some easily combo'd hitbox character.

and imo melee has a very toxic community, most people go around saying if you prefer something else to melee the only reason is because youre bad at melee.

that's all i've got to put into this

i think youre way overstating how good fox/falco/marth are
there are like 12 characters that you can do stuff with. axe is top 10 and he plays pikachu exclusively. plup plays sheik and samus and he's also top 10. shroomed plays sheik only, top 10. armada plays loving peach (and fox tho) and hes the best player in the world

yeah though PM undeniably has better balance. but melee isnt terrible in that area

yeah theres elitism in the melee community sometimes. i dont think that should reflect on the game tho

youre probably right, I am over-exaggerating, the spacies and the weeb

melee itself isnt that bad as a game, the community really bothers me is all

i think its mostly an online thing. when you actually sit down and play melee you have to sit next to somebody on a CRT. theres not much room to be an starfish when there are like, real life consequences to your words.

i'm fairly sure people only cling onto melee because they're afraid to step off

this is a huge problem with the melee 'community'
smash 4 and brawl are completely different games
they're not trying to be melee
if you want a clone of melee in each release, you're going to end up with a call of duty-esque franchise

but why do i bother trying to argue against melee in this melee-hugbox of a thread? i don't even know that myself

but why do i bother trying to argue against melee in this melee-hugbox of a thread? i don't even know that myself
what's the deal with this
you're saying melee isn't good, others are saying melee is good
how is it in your eyes a problem that melee is being defended when it's not a problem you're attacking it
