Not really. Sure religions hinder technological advancement, but they also give people, well, faith and hope. Start banning all religions like Riddler on steroids and you get people being all pissed because they want to be free to their beliefs. If you try and make the scenario that if religion never existed in the first place, that the world would be better, then that's just dumb. If people didn't have those believed explanations for the things that they believed (ex. God creating everything) then they would be frustrated they didn't know. They wouldn't have had the technology to find out about "the big bang" or any other theories about creation for millennia, not to mention depression.

humans have a very wide range of personalities and temperaments which do not have to correlate to their beliefs

if I remember correctly, the super-deadly world war 1 was caused by an assassination and a bunch of alliances. that's probably an oversimplification, but humans will find reasons to kill each other with or without religion. that's why one of the ten commandments had to be "thou shalt not kill"
