It does not make sense for them to switch it up like that. If NK was going to retain plausible deniability of developing a nuke by detonating it below ground, they would have done that from the start. Not to mention not bragging about it in state media. They need everyone, their people especially to think they have such power. If there was confirmation NK didn't have weaponized nuclear capability, other world powers, such as Russia, SK, the US or China would have made their move ages ago.

this is flat-out incorrect. japan had no chance of defeating the united states after midway. their defeat was inevitable after the first six months post-pearl harbor, and the japanese high command knew it (hence the Self Delete defenses of iwo jima/okinawa and Self Delete tactics like kamikaze)

after midway, their navy was annihilated. their military was bogged down in china and the japanese knew they were screwed. they were running out of resources, manpower, and money, but not morale. hence their decision to fight until the end. meanwhile, the american military-industrial conglomerate strode ahead and started pumping out tanks, weapons, planes, ships, etc. much faster than any contemporary military could destroy them
