yooka laylee tries too hard to be banjo kazooie
this is exactly what they marketed as and what people paid for

why is anyone surprised

tbh nuts and bolts wasn't a bad game itself
the problem was that it wasn't what the fans were expecting and they threw an autistic fit
correct

The only nostalgia driven kickstarted game that was actual good was Shovel knight, and that's because it took out the bad parts of the old games and kept the good. Too many nostalgia driven games try to go all 100% and it ends up having some of the same very frustrating issues old games had that we choose to ignore. People love looking at old games fondly but always forget how bad some of them really played, especially by today's standards.

The review score aren't too surprising when you remember what Banjo Kazooie got when it was rereleased on XBLA and compare them to the scores of Yooka Laylee:

For reference heres how the original BK stacked up

From what I'm gathering Playtonic did deliver a pure Banio Kazooie, but unlike Shovel Knight they didn't integrate the design of old and modern games whilist keeping the bad parts from both away. I've never played the original BK so I don't know what problems the game had.

Also worth mentioning that a 7 isn't a bad score, not at all, just isn't great or amazing. It's an underperformed score seeing as people were expecting a Shovel Knight caliber of scores, but it's nowhere near being abysmal or a bomb. I'll end up picking the game up from sale later down the road.

TBH I didn't care for the original Banjo Kazooie. Lots of design choices I didn't like.

it couldve had more ideas and properly fleshed out gameplay
if the camera thing isnt intentional then i dont know what other reason it could be that isnt unpolished design
