Just make golden warhammers.

My plan is to get the fort into a self-supporting state and then work on a military and some mining operations. What kind of minerals/ores/whatever they are should I be hoping to stumble upon?

Iron bearing minerals mostly, since iron = steel, and steel = best equip you can make besides Adamantine stuff.

Here's a brief summary of what kind of rock you should dig into to find iron

Quote
Iron ore is found in sedimentary layers and igneous extrusive layers. Andesite, Basalt, Felsite, Obsidian, and Rhyolite layers are igneous extrusive, while Sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, shale, claystone, rock salt, limestone, conglomerate, dolomite, flint, chert, and chalk layers are sedimentary.

And, the names of the three iron-bearing rocks

Iron occurs naturally, and can be achieved from any of three separate ores: Hematite, magnetite and limonite.

You should also look for Basalt, which contains Platinum veins, gold and copper. You can train your armorsmiths and weaponssmiths by making Copper Helms and copper weapons (1 copper bar cost per helm, all weapons cost 1 bar as well), and then re-melting the products. Gold and Platinum are just really shiny and nice.

Something I usually do is have atleast 2 or 3 miners mine a network of tunnels spanning entire Z levels. Then I just micromanage the rest of my dwarves while waiting for my miners to uncover the goodies. A positive side effect of this is that Strange Moods occur allot more often depending on the amount of squares you've mined, and strange moods can lead to some easy Legendary dwarves.

I don't like making huge areas useless because I mined them in such a way as to make them unusable for any sort of construction.

Also, keep DF discussion IN THIS THREAD PEOPLE.

Nah just make straight, 1 width tunnels all over the place, like a giant net. Mining giant square rooms should be avoided, since cave-ins can happen sometimes.

My God this game is awesome. I had a dwarf take over a craftsdwarf's workshop and then he freaked out because he couldn't find any jewels. He's currently running around in the forest, stripping off all his clothes and babbling.

I found platinum, hematite and loads of other stuff. I also redirected a river for water supply.
I'm starting to get the hang of this game :3

Also, my sheriff got into a strange mood and went on a rampage(nobody was hurt, however)

Huge nets are not particularly reusable, and I know you didn't mean rooms.

And nowadays they are only causing cave-ins when somehting becomes detached from all supports.

Oh forget, my dwarf was injured in a sparring match, and as usual all the other dwarves with Health Care completely ignore anything that's injured.

Fantastic, guess I'll get another coffin ready.

:cookieMonster:  Have a dedicated health care dwarf.

Works for me.

Also I really hope that aquifers in ocean areas are safe to drink.

"What is up with all these damp walls?"

"...oh crap I'm right underneath a pond"

Glad I didn't screw over my food stocks.

Anti, from the wiki:

Oceans have a multitude of benefits: they're generally sparsely populated, they usually have an abundance of arable soil, and the nearby aquifer may provide an accessible source of freshwater.

How do I retake a door?

Retake? If it was stolen you won't get it back.

No, a thief went through it. It's solved now; once a dwarf walked through it, I could forbid it and whatever.

Starting a fort with a magma vent so I can see what magma is like.   :cookieMonster:

Just keep your dwarves away from the magma until you can capture/kill all the fire imps and firemen. Imps aren't as bad, but firemen can quickly scorch dwarves. Firemen also seem to be a bit braver then imps and will tend to wander around outside the vent

The map is alright, right here if anyone wants it.

There are two places where you can easily have a magma vent and a brook or stream, according to the embark screens.
