adventure mode=forced adventure. you need to have adventure to level up so you don't suck balls at the game.

you need to find the supplies to build with, for the average player the only way to build anything is to explore and mine through caves. in servers with warps especially because you don't need to go and explore as much as you want without danger of not being able to make it back without running into complications.
