So I want to build a huge globe from the bottom of the map to the sky.

I always find a really complex cave system, then I build a really dim trail of redstone torches so it's still really dark in the caves.  Then I make a really cool looking Hell temple, with a sacrificial altar and St. Peter's cross (aka the upside down cross).  Then somewhere hidden is a hatch that leads all the way down to Bedrock where lava pours in from everywhere into a big cave, and across a lake of lava is a Portal to the Nether.

I also build a golden cross usually on top of the highest mountain nearest the spawn.
