I got almost three stacks of obsidian from a quarry. It hit into an underground lake early on and water spilled out all over it.

So it hit lava near bedrock and it all turned into obsidian. :D

the only good one on the minecraft forums is 18+ and has some stuffty rules like "no unrealistic builds such as underground compounds, 10 story buildings, buildings in lakes or oceans, but large statues made of cobblestone with glowing eyes are alright.
