Perhaps it's because of the movie, perhaps it's because I'm a tad drunk. Who knows. But I feel now, even more offended and put off by this movie now than I was seeing it. Firstly, allow me to say that the movie's visuals are beautiful and the directing is spotless (mostly). I have no beef with M. Night Shamallamadingdong's directing style; it's his writing and story telling that really forget this film up the ass. Hard.

For the record, I was not an avid fan of the cartoon series. I'd seen it, and enjoyed it to some extent. It was interesting and worth my time watching it. Imagine yourself as a kid who loves this show on Nick, and is overjoyed with the idea of seeing his favorite characters on the silver screen, bending it like Beckham with their elements. Now, chances are that child will be overwhelmed with it all and probably enjoy it. But let's be real, that child knows nothing about movies. This is where I come in.

So, first off, we must start with how god damned rushed this film was. And I don't mean it in a sense of production. I mean the god damned story telling. What the show had was 20 episodes, each a half an hour to tell an over arching story, which also gave it free reign to wander off occasionally to the tune of sub plots, but that's acceptable. This movie tries to take those 20 episodes, a half an hour each, which is ten hours, and cram it all into a tiny little 2 hour sitting. It was disgusting the level of pace it took. "Hey, what's this in the water- oh forget it's the avatar- oh forget the fire nation- oh forget they took him- oh forget we have to go rescue him, he's like totally the greatest thing ever", and that was just the first ten minutes. She didn't even know he was the Avatar yet.

Secondly, and possibly worse than the crack cocaine pace of the film, was that they changed his god damned name. It's Aang, pronounced A- N - G, like Angus. This was established in the cartoon. Everyone calls him Aang. But now, no, forget you and your stupid little cartoon, his name is pronounced ung, because it just wasn't Asian enough for us. Every time any character said his name, I felt like screaming: "ANG, ANG, ANG, ANG!"

But you want to know what was worse than that? I could have easily taken all of the flaws stated so far, and had a semi-decent film. BUT. NO. The acting. The, god damned, acting. Seriously? Sure, some of these actors were screen virgins, and to them I give them the benefit of the doubt. But seriously, that kid from Slum Dog Millionaire? Which won so many awards and stuff? He was terrible. Not only was all the cast completely unfitting to the characters they're supposed to be portraying, but the kid playing the fire nation prince just couldn't get it down. He could not get arrogance. Something every egotistical actor just cannot live without. He was too angry when he shouldn't be, too arrogant when he clearly was an starfish, and just too angst throughout.

Perhaps though, I shouldn't blame it on the actors. Perhaps it wasn't their fault. Then, you might ask, whom should I place the blame? Why, they were simply reading what was on the page. So, guess what? The writer! Who wrote this awful piece of horse stuff you might ask? Why, it was Shamallamadingdong! He was credited with directing, writing, and producing this crapfest. The dialog was so bland and dull, that it was laughable. There were scenes where you would laugh, just at how bad it sounded, and it was supposed to be a serious scene! Here's an example: the water nation princess is telling Saka, or whatever, (SPOILER)how she's going to give her life so the moon spirit can live.(SPOILER) She says: "we're going to show the fire nation that we believe in what we believe in as much as they believe in what they believe in." Or something very similar. Believe, believe, believe. Seriously? How confusing is that phrase, really? It's acted terribly, and written even worse, and leaves you feeling sick that you speak the same language and that someone could use it in such a vile and boring way.

The story did its best to follow the cartoon, but the changes Shamallama did to it, it just doesn't make it. Literally, it was like watching a rehashing of Star Wars. Which, is just like what Eragon did. Yeah, I went there, not only was the movie awful, Eragon the book was unoriginal and just boring as hell. But, I digress. This movie had one thing going for it, and that was this: the fight scenes were actually smooth and took place in one shot. No crazy shaking and moving about the place like it's Hati, just smooth, simple fight scenes with great special effects.

The worst part is, this is expected to be a trilogy, and while this film to me just didn't cut it to be worthy of even one sequel, I do know that Viacom would love to milk it for all its worth. Expect to see Avatar: The Second to Last Airbender soon. So, among all else, don't see this film. Oh, and don't see it in 3D either. I was lucky enough to be in a theater that didn't offer it in 3D, else I would have wasted the money for it. If you're really that egar to see it, and have higher hopes for this film than I offer, wait for DVD. Really, it is just not worth seeing in theaters. Most of the time I felt like giving my two bit commentary on it, which I couldn't because the theater was rather packed actually. My friends decided to do so, though, and the black gentlemen in front of him would have probably beaten him senseless. Really though, we were saving him the trouble of watching.

TL;DR: Don't see it. Over hyped, underacted, and poorly written. Don't waste the time nor the money.

Creativity / The (new) Adventures of Kris
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:48:27 PM »
Ok, so a little bit of quick backstory:

Last year was a very boring year for me. In academe (study hall) I had literally nothing but free time. I like to draw, and took a kid's persona and made it all warped, fat, a huge nose, and stupid. Now this kid has a great sense of humor, because he loved them. Perhaps he loved the idea that I was drawing short little one panel comics, and he was the star. Who knows.

Anyway, one panels progressed into multiple panels and stretched across a multitude of stories. As far as I know, there are over 80 pages of this stuff, all done, one a day for an entire year (front and back) on 8x11 computer paper.

A pencil, no straight edge, and improv and imagination fueled these comics, and now I've decided to do something with them. The comics are stored in a binder with those plastic sleeved keeping them from being damaged. I told Kris to pick his favorite series. They are as follows:

The Adventures of Kris
How Kris Saved Kristmas
K2 (a short)
Kris Season 2
Kris: The Valentines Pen Adventure (done on pink paper in pen)
Kris and the School Project (a short)
Kris Spring Special
Kris II (sequel to Adventures of Kris)
Kris: Happy Birthday (2 day special short)
Kris Season 3
End of the Year Krisapalooza (last 3 days of school special)

All of these together are roughly 40 or 50 pages of pencil (and pen) doodles. What I've decided to do is digitally ink and refurbish these comics to worthy viewing, then self publish them. However, as a special treat to you guys, I'll post a new page every time I finish one.

What I need from all of you is support. This is really a time consuming process, and I need to know if you guys like it or not. If I'm doing it for all of you, at least I have something to shoot for.

So tell me if you think this has potential, if it's total crap, or maybe this doesn't suit you, but you want to see the next issue. Whatever your beef, tell me. The more support I can muster, the more likely it is I'd finish this.

What more, if you were interested in purchasing my self published book, I'd be willing to sign copies or put your name in it or something. You know, if you'd want that sort of thing. It doesn't matter.

Oh, and as of page one here, it does get better. I suppose they are rather funny, if you like fat idiots trying to save the world. To me, they've lost their charm, mostly because of the torture they've caused making them days straight, but now even more with the inking. UUHHG.

Dunno who remembers the old topic, but it's gone back into the depths of 'too old' and can't be bumped again. So, I started this one for you all. Because, now I have another page done, and I actually plan on finishing these. Note, the typo errors are still there from before. I'll fix em' later when I actually put this thing to print. Yay self publishing.

I was goofing around this evening and stumbled upon what I consider the greatest thing I've ever drawn so far.

What started as this picture:

(which was commented on about how it looked like I had a robotic eye)

And in which I drew this:

And then turned it into this:

Which is now this:

And thus the story of my new avatar. Rate it you're into that sort of nonsense. I'm just sharing stuff that makes me happy because I'm a super nerd.

Off Topic / My Game Review
« on: May 31, 2010, 12:04:44 AM »
Not to be an AVGN rip-off, but my friends and I decided to do game reviews ourselves, because we've played a lot of games.

Mondays with Matt, Wednesdays with Dylan and Saturdays with myself, Scott.

Here's mine:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWNJGUZNPaE&playnext_from=TL&videos=Ix4X8UuF0Bc&feature=sub

You can also see two of Dylan's, as it's all we have up so far. Once Matt starts into it, and I upload my second review, we're hoping to keep up a formula schedule.

This is actually the first project I've ever taken up that really eats none of my time because it's fun and easy to make them, unlike anything else I've attempted.

Plus, subscribe if you want to see my next review (hopefully up tomorrow) as it's a lot better than this one.

Creativity / Open Comic Book Casting Call
« on: April 16, 2010, 08:10:05 PM »
UPDATE:

P CMC!

We have successfully obtained 11 artists. Sorry for those of you who didn't make it or were unable to make it due to problems, however, I say good luck to you next time. If this is successful as I hope it shall be, then there will be a Open Comics Volume 2, 3, 4 etc, depending on popularity.

So don't worry, you'll get another shot!

In the meantime, you'll notice that we've started our first collaborative effort, and that is designing a logo. Note to artists, once your letter is finished, post them and I'll order them, then later they'll be used as one image to represent the book when it is finished.

Are you a bleeding heart and or artist? Then congratulations! We want you!

Once upon a time, two of the forum's most renounced artists decided to call upon the other renounced artists to get together to make something epic. It became: Open Comic Book Casting Call.

Open Comic Book Casting Call, or OCBCC for short, is a project designed to self publish a graphic novel made by us, the artists of the Blockland Forums. The basic premise is simple, and done before, but it could very well be worth it. Once enough artists have been collected, we'll all meet and sketch a rough story plot together, then draw numbers. The person who gets number 1 starts the story with a page or so. When they're done, artist 2 takes over and draws the next few pages, and so on and so on.

The plot is the only thing concrete, the rest is up to the artist with control of the pages. For instance, if one artist introduces a new character, the next one has now that character to use, or that setting, or whatever. It's all up to who controls the story at one point.

If you're interesting in this self published endeavor, then post something to show us your artistic skill, as well as something that shows your ability to tell a story, or even just the ability to improvise.

All rules such as time limits or page limits and story will be fleshed out when we have accumulated enough artists.

For any questions or ideas, contact myself or Worm, for we are the curators of this event.

Good luck with the "audition" fellows!

Just an idea. Since we didn't get to do Impromptu this week, and I'm off from school tomorrow, I was wondering if you'd guys like me to do a morning show, just to test it out. It'd be more music based where I'd play requests and what not, but it'd still be me talking.

See I figure I want to do radio as a profession, so I'd like to practice, and I have all the equipment up here in my room as well to broadcast. So it's up to you, would you guys like to hear that sort of thing, or what?

It'd also be way more Blockland oriented, might even have a special building server up for listeners so you can interact with me ingame as well as through the radio.

I don't know what time, I get up at roughly 10 EST, so if I had it on at 11 EST till like, whenever I get bored of doing it. I'll play all sorts of music, mostly classic rock though, as that's what I like, but I'll take any and all requests.

So tell me now who thinks they might be interested.

Games / The Adventures of Valen and Khorde

I know what you're probably thinking.

However, despite what you might feel about the series, it's something from me, and have I ever steered you wrong?

An early beta of the game. Based on a silly cartoon series by silly people, I hoped to take their interesting characters and put them in a comedic adventure. What I hope will use unique puzzle designs and platform elements, a compelling story, and witty dialog is a neat indy game that I'm sure most will like.

Look forward for further updates and the chance to be a beta tester and later a play tester.

Perhaps you all remember those years, perhaps you don't.

Personally, I do. The 90s, for me, were a great time. I was born then. I was raised through an age of digital revolution, back when everyone was "new" at web design.

God damn did stuff look horrible. I remember my first website, it was nothing but three gifs and an embedded sound clip. I loved it though.

So, when my friends convinced me to get one of these new tumblr things, I decided to best express myself, was to show the internet back to it's roots:

http://swholli.tumblr.com/

I might post, I might not. Just revel in it's horridness, and think how lucky you are that java and flash exist so everything is all "user friendly"

A real web surfer, he could spend hours looking through links. You kids and your "navigation bars".

Oh, and I just had that sicken thought that, that was 20 years ago. Uhhg.

So there's this girl I like. Nothing too romantic about it, other than I'd be interested in perhaps taking her out sometime, that sort of thing.

Now, this is mostly hypothetical because really, I'm tired of all this high school drama bullstuff and I have better fun being single.

Say I asked her out in the near future, as a full fledged boyfriend. Now, say she said no (shocker there).

We see each other roughly 20 minutes and a class that she sits three sections ahead of me. She thinks I'm funny and she does enjoy my company, we're not the greatest of friends but we share a few things in common, yadda yadda yadda.

So, lets say she says no. What would that possibly do? Would it really be such a complete and total offense that she no longer speaks to me? Period?

She's not the girl to get easily embarrassed, she's very smart, and hell, she's a senior so she's rather mature.

So, all I'm saying is, if I were to ask her out, what do you think would happen? Me personally, I don't plan to do it, simply because I didn't really want to all of a sudden. Perhaps I'll ask her to a dance or prom or something, if that. It happened to be brought up in band the other day when I heard she was single. I said to a friend: "Eh, she's cute and I rather enjoy hanging around her, I'd probably be interested." Then he said something to the effect of: "you have no chance" or some lame remark, and I said: "Hey, maybe I'll ask her out just to shut you up." Some how or another this got me into a huge fight about: "don't do it man, she;ll never speak to you again, it'll be awkward!"

Please, I'm the king of awkward. I'd relish it.

The only reason I ask is because these people are so god damned immature that they still deal with relationships in the 3'rd grade mindset. Sending people notes, having another person ask if you like them, all this nonsense that I think we need to grow out of.

So, someone say they support me so I can shut this kid up.

EDIT: Damn typo.

Heh, well no. But I do have something.

It could very well be swine flu. I'm not just saying it because I think I have swine flu, I say it because our school has had several registered and confirmed cases of swine flu.

Two of those people were sick in the band room on Monday, and then Tuesday they were out with swine. I have the band room 4'th block, they 2'nd. So, who knows.

I do know that I have no respiratory problems and/or allergies, so don't any one worry about me dieing.

I guess that this is really a post to say: "Hey, I might have it. Feel sorry for me."
