General Discussion / Old Blockland Screenshots and Discussion
« on: July 27, 2023, 08:41:20 PM »
Hey guys. I do not know if many of you remember me, but I have recently been cleaning up old, OLD hard drives. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the oldest screenshots on my family's Gateway machine (rip), but I have some photos from when Greenlight was a huge thing back then.

Like many of you, Blockland was a transformative experience for me. While nothing can last forever, I am sure we can all hold dear to our hearts what Blockland was. For many, it shaped our futures. Many became content developers, computer scientists, and engineers because of Blockland. The Airport RPs I played in got me interested in aviation, so at some point, I decided that I wanted to be an aerospace engineer. The Off Topic board games, like the Nation RPs, got me intensely interested in geopolitics, map games (EU4), and world history. I look back at my history in Blockland fondly, and I am glad that I was fortunate enough to avoid most of the drama that went on around here. The community could have been a little better (trolls, hackers, child enthusiasts, etc.), but the game itself brought so many people together to build stuff.

No one looks in the gallery anymore and I think this post can also foster some more generic discussions about Blockland. Go at it.

First three are from one of the Greenlight celebration servers, the fourth is from YorkTown's CityRPG (I think his last one?), and the last is from Heed's Slopes TDM revival.

I am extremely happy to see how far this project has gone thus far. Has Badspot ever contacted you about it, though? Not like you need his permission or anything.

It might be that I'm used to "Blockland," but Block Party should either be Blockparty or you need to choose something different.

General Discussion / Re: Saving Blockland: Our Survival Guide | An Update

I think the problem with Blockland is that it is literally a time curve to get into the "full potential" of the game. Why the hell would I buy a game that looks cool, join a server, and then wait for a long time while I put all of the server's content into cache (downloading the datablocks)? That is a bad impression. The fundamental flaw with the game is that the base game is cool and all, but most of the servers have content that is hard to get into, and doing that takes time because of the way the game handles add-ons - as literal add-ons that you must download.

If I misinterpreted how Blockland handles things, please do tell.

Depending on how serious this turns out to be, we might see a hit in the total computing power of the human race until there is a permanent fix. Also, Intel's stocks:

I wouldn't suggest buying now if you're interested because once this becomes mainstream (if it does) stocks will hiccup again.

ok you gotta make sure its positive and shows how ur experiences led you to who you are

theres basically 0% chance an admissions officer will actually look up this place cause in general admission officers get about 8 minutes per application to read over the whole thing and decide yes or no or consider again later. if you feel confident about landing solidly in yes with an essay about blockland + the rest of your application you're in the green.
im going for that essay that will break up the monotony; they look for those essays

Do they reject applicants from Kansas because some people from Kansas dislike a certain race of people? I don't think so!!!!

Even though this community is a great disappointment, I doubt they will even research the game or look too deep into it.

Believe it or not, Blockland was the very game that got me super interested in many of the things I find myself loving today. Although I don't play Blockland anymore, its impact on me is a worthy (and I think unique, if well written) response to the prompt: Tell us about a person who has influenced you in a significant way.

Badspot, you're going to be the topic of my essay; I've procrastinated on this essay way too much. This is an idea that just won't leave my head.
Wish me luck. I'll have a fun time trying to explain to the admissions of an Ivy how some guy from Oregon influenced my life.

i hope they don't look up his research site

while that's true, non-voters have decided that they don't want their voice heard in the results. if you decide to boycott an election you don't get to complain when it's followed
they also voted, more narrowly, in favor of statehood last referendum:,_2012
uh, ask yourself:
why was the referendum boycotted?

I'm applying to Princeton early action. I'm pretty sure I'm getting in. /s

Anyone else? Where do y'all go?

I saw something that said "3.5 million americans in PR need help"

but they aren't technically american and they want to be independent from america anyways. lol

PR is strong and independent until they need help.
Are you stupid? Puerto Ricans are having another referendum (I guess not in October anymore...). We don't know if they want to be independent.

And they are technically American. Citizens. By birth.

Any other president would be like, "OH MY GOD NO :(". And the same response would be happening. Annoying Orange isn't king. Government is a living, breathing organ of bureaucracy. We're already doing the max we can reasonably do as a government. The USACOE is already there (since, what, Irma?). FEMA is working their asses off. The private sector is responding reasonably well.

Puerto Rico is such a stuff fest right now because they're poor as forget. Their infrastructure is stuff and because of its stufftiness Maria blew through and inserted her clit right into PR's starfish. When your power system can be forgeted forever (they can't repair, they have to literally replace it) because of one domino, you should check yourself.
