Well temps like those are SOMEWHAT normal for a laptop (one that i've dealt with anyways,) now I have another question; what brand is your laptop from?

My laptop just instantly shut down from thermal overload protection.
After this, I waited 15 minutes for the computer to cool down to a regulated level, then started it.

SpeedFan is reporting temperatures around 65C, but for some reason which I do not know, the power button light, and battery light are blinking (on/off with ½ second delays).

I have some mullah lying around, and I want to upgrade stuff (I recently noticed that running GTAIV at max settings makes it a little choppy...)

Current stats:
Intel i7 CPU, 930 @ 2.8GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
9216MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 (approx. total memory ~4067)

I suspect the geforce may be the weak link, but I'm not super hardware-savvy. Would someone tell me what I should upgrade - and what I should upgrade to? I'm planning to try and spend about $250 tops, but I'm gonna be keeping this computer for a while, so if the upgrade would cost more, I'd consider it.

A new GPU would benefit you. I don't know if this has been asked before but what is the wattage of your PSU?

Would this all work for bf3 on max? (i know some parts are out of stock, im in no rush)

Not entirely maxed out as that card is a little to weak for the resolution of the monitor, but it would do pretty well.

I've just read a hell of a lot of reviews/troubleshooting about ATI/intel problems. I'd be willing to pay more for an nvidia card of equal quality.

Now that's ignorance at it's worst form.
AMD has the most powerful GPU on the planet, and actually are IMO more reliable and have less driver problems than nVidia cards. Hell, I'm running Intel/AMD at the moment with no problems.

The nVidia one gets crushed by the AMD one.

I don't think it would make too much of a difference, but the GTX 560 is better. For the same price, go for the nVidia.

The 560Ti sucks compared to a 6950. Especially if it is one of those 6950s that you can either unlock or overclock well, then you'd be looking at next to GTX580 speeds.

Don't listen to that crap. AMD cards work perfectly with Intel. And if there are problems, there are similar problems for AMD boards, and Nvidia cards.
Nvidia and AMD work the same for Intel.
If AMD actually wanted to compete against Intel with their cards, they would've fully dropped support for Intel boards.
The ATI is better, not by a lot, but well worth the price.
Especially at higher resolutions.
However, the Nvidia is better if you plan on overclocking, as you can go past GTX 570 speeds if you overclock enough.
Luckily, that card has a great heatsink. So, in the end, go for the 560 ti.

Implying that you can't overclock the AMD card as well. Like I said above, if it is one of the earlier non-reference models then you would get way better performance than any 560Ti card, overclocked or not, 448 cores or not.

6950s are actually a good 5 to 10% ahead of a 560Ti.

I support this. 2GB of RAM for 2 monitors is great. 6970 is close to 580 performance with recent driver revisions. Only $300 with rebate, pretty awesome.

I'm currently just using the windows 7 multi monitor support feature. Is eyefinity better or something?

EDIT: I've also heard that it's possible to have two gpus for OVER 9000 POWER. Is this something worth considering? (the new one + the one I currently have)

Eyefinity means you can expand your game along many monitors, for a surround experience. Look it up on youtube.

It requires quite a lot of GPU power.

A lot of people are claiming the fans are quite noisy. Should I be afraid, very afraid?

Make sure to get one with the same resolution to avoid borking and increase eyefinity support if you wish to go that way.
