Author Topic: Game Design Megathread  (Read 554586 times)

Since I've been wanting to make a video game for basically ever since elementary, I thought I might as well want to tell you guys about it because why not. (and because this is the game design megathread) Please excuse me for the LONG pagestretch that's gonna happen.

I've always been wanting to make a video game because video games are just plain awesome and because I have a passion for computers and such, so I figured that this would be a good career for me; making video games or helping to make video games. I got this idea during the early years I have been playing in ROBLOX. (no hate please) and this is gonna contain elements from roblox, for now until i can get original ideas

I do not have any pictures of the ideas I have for my video game, so it'll just be text, for now. Everything's basically in planning, and I have the full story in my head right now.

Basically the game is about you, a genetically-engineered supersoldier, fighting the military power that created you, aka the Noob Army (current name for now) and assisting the Brick Army (current name for now) in defeating them. Along the way, you collect a buncha weapons and more importantly the swords from Telamon's SFOTH V to beat up the Noob Army better and fight your way through numerous zones, which are The Lab, The Island, The Jungle, The Firelands, The Abyss, The Heights, The Haunted, The Ice, The Dark, and The Shrine to claim the swords and defeat the Noob Army because they wanna destroy the virtual world you're in and Earth. It's you and a weakened military force versus a huge military power, armed with many ways to kill you and your friends, but you also have numerous ways to kill them back.

There's gonna be difficulty levels, which can bring different endings and better rewards for your next run.

VERY EASY - Easiest difficulty to play through. It's basically Slaughter Simulator, but boring for you because you're basically fighting a buncha braindead guys who can barely use guns. Your allies are also highly skilled and can basically do the work for you. You can only play the first few levels of the campaign before you're told to go play another difficulty as this is really meant for you get a taste of the game. There's no reward or secret ending for beating this difficulty.
"Your adventure will be easy so much to the point that you don't have to lift a finger. Sure, this will be boring, and you won't really see the whole adventure, but at least you'll know what's coming for you in the future, should you choose to ramp up the difficulty level."

EASY - A slight difficulty increase can be noticeable (unless you're highly skilled anyways) and you can die in here if you're not paying attention. Your allies are stronger than your foes and your foes are not very well trained in guns. Damage dealt to you and your allies is still weak. You can play the full campaign in this difficulty and at the end you get a shield for use in any other campaign difficulty and a weapon for use in another campaign run. You get the first part of the secret ending in this campaign.
"You will meet the enemy and you will triumph over them as they are poorly skilled and weak to your weaponry. You can watch as your enemies get mowed down from you and your allies arsenals of destruction, and they cannot do anything to stop you."

NORMAL - This is where things start to get serious. You and your allies still have a upper hand over your foes but not as much as Easy or Very Easy. Damage dealt to you and your allies are at regular level. You get a better shield than Easy and a weapon for beating this campaign and you get the 2nd part of the secret ending for beating this campaign.
"Your foes have improved, but so have you. They are determined to stop you and your allies, but plan your attacks and you will beat the enemy without too much trouble. This is the way your adventure should be."

HARD - The enemy has higher skill than your allies and damage dealt to you and your allies is increased. Survival is not guaranteed and you're gonna die a couple of times along the way unless you're skilled enough to not die a lot. Enemy health is also increased to give you a rough time. Beating this campaign gives you a tough shield, a good weapon, and you can see the 3rd part of the secret ending.
"Your enemies are serious this time, gaining powerful weapons and your allies won't be much helpful. But, with your skill and with your mind, you will beat the enemy, or you will fall and perish many, many times."

VERY HARD - Your enemies are out to kill you without mercy and you're surely gonna get your ass kicked a lot more times than Hard difficulty did. Your allies are almost useless and they're basically target practice here, but that can prove useful for you. Beating this campaign will give you a powerful shield, a powerful weapon, and the 4th part of the secret ending.
"Your allies will be helpless here, as it is only all up to you to obtain victory. Mistakes are not to be used here, or suffer the wrath of high temperature laser beams shredding you over and over again."

LEGEND - The hardest difficulty and most likely the most rage-inducing difficulty there is in this game. This is gonna take days or weeks for you to finish (unless you break your TV screen or computer in the rage). Beating this difficulty gives you the best shield and weapon you can get from campaign runs and will give you the full secret ending.
"Invincible enemies, with godlike guns and overpowered vehicles, all coming for you and your allies. You and your allies are just as weak as they were in the very first difficulty. You will die, so, so many times. But, if you believe, you will triumph. And you'll show those maggots who's boss."

Your weapons arsenal will contain primarily of laser-type weapons, but you'll also be able to use swords, which is one of the prime focuses of the game. Each sword and their upgrades will give you magic abilities to help you beat the guys that want to kill you. The swords come from Telamon's SFOTH V. (i need an original concept lol) When you upgrade to a new sword, the magic from the old sword goes to the new sword you are using, upgrading their abilities and such.
When I make the original concepts for these, I'll change the names of the swords.
SWORD - Level 1 gives you Sword Beam, Level 2 gives you Iron Ball, Level 3 gives you Scatter Bomb, and Level 4 gives you Sword Rain.
FIREBRAND - Level 1 gives you Spark, Level 2 gives you Inferno Wheel, Level 3 gives you Fire Pillar, and Level 4 gives you Meteor Shower.
VENOMSHANK - Level 1 gives you Poison Blade, Level 2 gives you Poison Goo, Level 3 gives you Poison Shot, and Level 4 gives you Poison Soul.
WINDFORCE - Level 1 gives you Gust, Level 2 gives you Thunder Storm, Level 3 gives you Tornado, and Level 4 gives you Hurricane.
GHOSTBRAND (or however its called) - Level 1 gives you Invisibility, Level 2 gives you Scare, Level 3 gives you Phantom, and Level 4 gives you Horrify.
ICE DAGGER - Level 1 gives you Chill, Level 2 gives you Cold Touch, Level 3 gives you Freeze, and Level 4 gives you Time Capsule. (get it?)
DARKHEART - Level 1 gives you Shatter, Level 2 gives you Blind, Level 3 gives you Darkness, and Level 4 gives you Bane of the World.
ILLUMINA - Level 1 gives you Glow, Level 2 gives you Light Bolts,  Level 3 gives you Light Pillar, and Level 4 gives you Savior of the World.

that's all i'm going to share here. i'm gonna head to a magnet school for engineering (that also has video game design classes) so hopefully i can learn how to make a basic 2d platformer and from there i can make full-blown video games, in given time. everything is not really set in stone and such and things are gonna change. years in the making, people. and i think i have some of the sequel in my head already, lol. i'm gonna have to change things for sure so i can try to have a lot of originalness.

also there's gonna be references to other games, characters, genres, etc in this game so gg

About me

Let me introduce myself. My name is Squidbee, I've been a Blockland member since 2007. I am the CEO of Golden Block Productions , And I've been working with Blockland filmmaking since 2009.

Interest in Game Developing

I've caught interest into developing games a couple of months ago. I'm a beginner to programming and coding, I'm currently using BlitzMax to program 2D games. I'm starting to learn Unity3D to, obvisouly, make 3D games. I'm more interested in making Gameboy-looking 2D games like Bushido. I'm also considering to purchase Gamemaker for 2D games, I'm pretty sure that Bushido uses Gamemaker for
his 2D games.

Conclusion

I really like how you planned out your video game. I'd be nice to have someone to work with on developing video games, are you interested in having a team/partner for game developing? Like I said, I'm a beginner to all of this programming and coding but I have a pretty good idea on how to do most of the programming. I could create a small "company" for programming, designing, and musics. But that will only happen if this is something you really want to do. If you want to talk, just PM me.

wait why did you even quote him if you were just going to talk about yourself

it's the °д° face, connection with 'blockland filmmaking', and possible inflated ego

Yoooo guys I've been doing a lot of drawing and writing recently and I've got some great ideas for a (possibly) sidescrolling psychological horror game with a weird art style but instead of trying to learn how to make a game and subsequently stuffting out something awful, I was wondering if anyone here wanted to collab on this.

If you're going to ask for help;

a) Post amazing concept art and screenshots.
b) Explain specifically what you want to achieve, including extremely specific gameplay mechanics and level counts.
c) Describe what kind of roles you'd like filled, and how many.
d) List your experience.
e) Be open to critique.

I would love to work on another game project, but I'm currently swamped because of loving character design. Ask me in two months and I'll probably say "Let's loving do this."

character design is like the best part what's got you stopped up

character design is like the best part what's got you stopped up
This is a Character Design class for college with a focus on animation; I don't draw, no exceptions, but it's required to pass the first assessment (worth 40% of the total grade).

One day I'll make a blogland about it; point is that I'm a programmer-type and while I love writing stories and characters, I don't enjoy rendering them out.

IcyGamma was the creator of the MicroBlock Icecube A2 - Advance BLPC Computer. The MicroBlock Icecube is the only released build that allows you to run custom applications without editing the computer itself. Using a CPU that detects what keys are pressed, your programs can be highly functional without needing to be manually edited into the build. This made it so you can make your own ROMs for the computer. Me, Blockteen, and Remousamavi were starting to develop games for the Microblock computer. Thats part of the reason I got interested into game developing, IcyGamma was a big role model for my game programming for the Microblock.
