Author Topic: supreme court struck down affirmative action 6-2  (Read 34373 times)

so when its in effect, they can go "okay your doing pretty horrible but since you're black we'll just let you go on"?
or is it the other way around?
I'm slightly confused about this but I want to understand it really
lets say two kids apply to X college
one kid has a 3.0 GPA and the second has a 3.5 GPA
the first kid gets accepted, why? because he's a minority

libtards

;c

that doesn't mean they're right

no but it's a pretty good tl;dr

lolno. it makes them ignore race in applications

no, it doesn't

the entire point is to give an advantage to minorities, not ignore race entirely which I wish it did

lets say two kids apply to X college

the first kid gets accepted, why? because he's a minority
wrong
that isn't what affirmative action is

I don't know. There are reasons for affirmative action beyond "forget white people". Minorities haven't yet fully economically recovered from the pre-civil rights era so most of them are stuck in poverty. Poverty means they get worse education available to them. One way to end this poverty would be to make it easier for those affected to obtain a decent higher level education, so they can become eligible for high-paying jobs and bring their family out of poverty.

Here's an interesting article I found on the benefits of affirmative action.
http://www.alternet.org/10-reasons-affirmative-action-still-matters-today

To be honest I used to oppose Affirmative Action but it was mostly because I wanted the best possible chance to get into the schools of my choice. I realized if you work hard enough then your race won't matter.

wrong
that isn't what affirmative action is
Okay, so what IS affirmative action then? In your own words, please.

if its to make them "ignore race" why is race on the application in the first place? lol

For those actually wanting to see what he said:
"The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Bro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom."
i like my version better
wrong
that isn't what affirmative action is
ok man just take a break this isn't healthy

i'm just saying:

the argument for supporting this is literally hinging upon wikipedia's definition of affirmative action i mean you guys keep citing and using it over and over again

find something more credible

also i'm not disagreeing with you by saying this, it's just that you're repeating the same thing over and over again without really acknowledging what night fox is saying whether it's right or wrong

don't ask me. it should be illegal to ask that too. same for gender and income

no need
ok man just take a break this isn't healthy
??

Also as most of you are probably white you don't know how much minorities and women are still discriminated against. I'm not saying white people are demons or whatever but white people don't experience racism to the same degree as other races.

edit: There seems to be a misconception that Affirmative Action will be used to recruit under qualified people for school or job positions. That's not true. Its purpose is to create a more diverse school/work environment, in the hopes that one day it won't be needed for diversity.

i still suggest humoring them
I really don't need to though. "my words" would just be a repitition of the articles I posted

Marriam-Webster: http://prntscr.com/3cj4ag
Encyclopaedia Britannica: http://prntscr.com/3cj4l4
Oxford Dictionary: http://prntscr.com/3cj4pc
Dictionary.Reference.Com: http://prntscr.com/3cj50b
And of course, Wikipedia.

Is this enough? 4 very credible sources all saying the same thing (dictionary.reference.com phrases it slightly differently, but it's the same thing).

women are still discriminated against.
>america
>women being discriminated against

...
Are you serious?
This article is specifically about how the Supreme Court of the United States dealt with affirmative action. We're not ignoring or saying the rest of the world is unimportant.

It's like asking, "how many people live in the US?"

And then you say "YEAH forget THE WORLD THE US IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RIGHT?"
I think my point was that America could concentrate on its majority.
America is by and large a white country, and just like say, Israel concentrates on its Jewish population, or china doesn't give non-Chinese preference, I think America shouldn't be going out of its way to change its demographic and mix cultures.

>america
>women being discriminated against
Women aren't a minority anyway.
