In what?
Gender identity disorder
Confusion, lunacy, identity dissociation, insecurity, and/or general bad judgement.
There are several established, peer reviewed studies on gender identity. There are also frightening statistics on homelessness rates, homicide rates, and more. (for example, 19% of transgender people have been homeless at some point in their lives, 2.5x the national demographic of 7%)

Why would trans people subject themselves to such discrimination? To feel like a "special snowflake"?

Considering some of the other stuff people do for exactly that purpose, it wouldn't really be surprising. It's also a fair bit of "follow the leader" mixed in there.

The recent generations are more expressive than previous ones, so yes, it involves "follow the leader".

I find it hard to believe that such a large subset of the population would want to be harassed by classmates, coworkers, and authority figures, or stay transgender when literally a third of trans people attempt Self Delete. If you want evidence rooted in anthropology, there are interesting cases where certain cultures will have a "third gender", lending credibility to the theory that gender is a state of mind. There are still plenty of scientific studies on this subject, here are more I found.

ok. even if you don't "believe" in transgender...ism, or whatever, for some reason. you literally can't deny that interlove people exist. that would be like trying to deny that fire is hot
