The stick a bow on it trend is part of a much larger trend of generalizing other's cultural experiences towards a westerncentric view. The publisher requests the game be targeted towardswhite males and thus the play experience is able to be homogenous in execution while presenting diversity. You still get no grasp of the culture of the people, and if you are going to put in that there is a difference between them, why not actually bring up what the difference is? I mean yeah you wouldnt want unbalanced game experiences, but that just brings more challenge and creative to the design.

I don't think the publisher actually requests for a specific demographic, but rather they have an expectation that you know what demographic you want to sell towards (except in certain cases like sequels, where it's more of the same). Usually publishers require teams to pitch to them new game ideas. What you have is a lot of developers in that slightly immature mindset who are making games that they (and their younger self) enjoy, and because there are plenty more male creative directors (which I don't think is a problem in and of itself, the discrimination that stops other types of people becoming creative directors is though) that are quite immature, we don't get a lot of range.

I am not trying to imply they knowingly do it. I have personally heard accounts of well put together game concepts being shot down because the e.p. doesn't think it will fly with the gamer demographic based on inadequate sampeling or any number of cultural nearsightedness related issues.
(the story that immediately pops into my head is a racing game based on the Homies figuring series that was quite popular in the ninties. The producer in the middle of the meeting called his ten year old white yuppie daughter to ask her if she had ever heard of the toy. Upon her denial, the request for the game was shot down and the months of market research into the profitability of the game dismissed)

Back in the day a nerd was someone who stayed inside and read books, played table top rpgs, played video games, programmed, used the internet, used computers, etc. So by using the internet he is saying that he should be degraded into submission. While it's not a hive mind, there was that is a group of tumblr extremists of the social justice type that decided to raid 4chan in the name of tumblr. It would be like "We are Americans and we have to nuke China because we are communists! For America! Oh yeah we have people are Chinese living here, we have to kill them too because they are Chinese!"
