Author Topic: Undertale - The RPG where you don't have to hurt anyone  (Read 316235 times)

ughhh i thought a genocide run would be fun but it's even more boring than the other routes

constantly walking around to get random encounters so you can kill everything is INSANELY tedious
is there any way to make this go faster
Humans are, by story, extremely powerful compared to monsters. There's a reason the monsters can't kill you when they probably should be. It's also why its so easy to kill them.

I feel like nobody understood what I was stating, Genocide Route isn't supposed to be easy. In the real world killing everyone isn't supposed to be easy because people will start becoming more and more scared of you the more you harm or kill and try to hide or run away from you. Genocide Route is meant to reflect that by showing you the reprocussion's of your action's which are quite heinous. Town's becoming empty vassal's, The spawn rate becoming ever more smaller and smaller as you kill everyone, monster's begging for you not to hurt there family's and the entire atmosphere and music becoming more morbid and eerie.

Why would you intentionally design something to be tedious?
Kinda fits with what basically every final boss tells you in some way: It could be twice as long and boring and people would still do it anyway just because they can. Undertale takes every opportunity to forget with you, so it makes the bad route the most miserable experience it can for the players who pass up every opportunity to turn back. Couple the grinding with sucking all the life out of the towns, removing the puzzles, making anyone who speaks with you hostile, and the two most difficult bosses the game has to offer, and the message is pretty clear: The game hates you for what you're doing. If you don't care, and keep killing just because you can, congratulations, you're Chara. You've defeated the enemy and became strong, and nothing else matters.

i really don't care about the messages or whatever that the game is trying to send to its audience: i just want to play a fun game

neutral & pacifist both disappointed me, though neutral was probably the best one because it didn't constantly waste your time

i thought genocide would be more fun because i like battling in RPGs but it turns out that the game is pretty much designed to torture the player for choosing this route, which honestly makes me wonder why it's even there in the first place

i don't care if my decision to kill fictional characters is morally incorrect, i just want to play a game. games are supposed to be fun. a game being made to be tedious on purpose doesn't make it any less tedious.

if you don't really care about the message the game is trying to tell the audience then maybe undertale isnt the game for you
the battle mechanics are by no means revolutionary, they're good but not the reason to play undertale
they serve as a vehicle for delivering the message

people experience fun differently. people are willing to grind through games if they have something else they enjoy, and undertale is no exception. it's a game that heavily appeals to explorers, and they don't care that they have to grind through enemies because it lets them further their exploration. not to mention that the way the mechanic works subtly lends itself further to the experience as a secondary result of the tedium

you're probably not the kind of player that undertale primarily resonates with and that's OK!!! seems like you've at least gotten something from the experience!!! just maybe not genocide lol!!
