Actually, with a cutlasses considerably lower balance than a gladius, it's damage increase is not that much.
EDIT : Also you can't ego or upgrade cutlasses.

The only things I can think of is things that are too fast for ice counter, and things that have mana reflector.
In which case i use fire counter :D

And lycanthropes. The only good strategy against those is windmill spam.
And stuff in Peaca. When I went there, everyone just windmill spammed, even the boss.

Either way, I found the game much more fun NOT doing those things.

True, but once you start getting to harder things, you'll either need to, or go ranged or magic.
A werewolf, gorgon, sprite, or other things with heavy stander will kill if you attack normally.

I'm ranged anyways, but I haven't played the game in a long time.
I think I quit around the time magnum shot or whatever came out.
