OT: I really don't see anything different with this update...
It's nothing major on the outside, but there are many mechanics that were changed and lots of new customization in creative mode/commands.

Nether portals are broken extremely buggy for me
Anyone else?

I'm using 1.7.10 and occasionally I have to spam the flint + steel all over the portals frame to get it to work.

Not only that, but the FPS in the Nether is excrutiating, and if I go in there and come back I have to restart the entire game or the lag continues.

This may or may not be a mod conflict/issue.

when i start minecraft my computer shuts off like 30 or so minutes later - i don't understand what is happening

The magma cube and blaze heads in the poll almost look like they morph.

Okay my computer shutting off was just me kicking my desk or something, but im still being careful

Look what I did!

Looks like my personal resource pack of like 3 years or something will finally get a release in the near future!

So big patch.. But.. Does it actually add anything new to do..?

by things to do there's underwater dungeons and if you're a resource pack maker you can now make different block models

there's also some new materials and you can now kill sheep for food
also bunnies
that's really it i think

Rabbit's Feet make you jump higher when brewed.

There's a lot of more things, too. For example:
Diorite, andesdite and granite for building materials
Lapis is now required to enchant, but now enchanting tells you a hint about what you're making beforehand
Almost everything is obtainable, and coarse dirt (non-spreading), chiseled stone bricks, moss stone/stone bricks, and cracked stone bricks all have new recipes
New wood-colored doors, fences, and an iron trapdoor
You can put buttons on ceilings
Banners
Red sandstone to go with the new red sand
Bouncy slime blocks
Armor stands to... hold armor
Smarter villagers
Soak water with the new sponge, and empty it by smelting it.

Don't forget the demon bunny that spawns rarely

Everyone acts like its this huge update but everyone in the Minecraft community is used to waiting months for a single new feature that they are now tricked into believing that this is a huge update

Well, considering they did do a rather needed performance update, it's pretty fair to say its a decent update.

Armour stands are the only interesting thing there for me. I really don't care about more blocks that have no use, I always built with wood and stone anyway.

I still haven't really build anything since this (3 years ago! Everybody sounds so young!)

Lol
I'm clearing out an ocean temple as the first thing I do
I ran out of food, so I made a fishing rod
the first thing I catch is a bow with about 80-85% durability with infinity I and unbreaking III
