Does anyone know how hard it is to mod Minecraft? If I remember correctly there is a tool to edit the files or something. All I want to do is edit the ways some mobs spawn, what they drop, and their mob preferences (speed, health) etc.

Equivalent Exchange doesn't feel the same anymore. The last time I used it I used it as kind of a way to turn my mountains of junk into a little pile of nice things, but now I'm just running around at lava lake level waving my divining rod around while my energy collectors amass minor amounts of EMC until I get a million diamonds so I can get all these end game items...and then what? I want to do what I used to do, but the only way to collect that much EMC to make these items is to continuously hunt for diamonds. Is it me or the mod maker who's doing something wrong here?
