I like to at least leave a 2-3 thick layer of dirt over the hole and make occasional glass skylighs so I don't plummit to my death all the time.

I usually branch mine, but I wonder how strip mining would turn out. I'd dig up a 5x5 area down to bedrock then dig around down there.
