Yeah. You can cancel the beginning frames of a dash attack with an up smash. My guess is Sakurai implemented this so that people would more often land running up smashes.

The whole reason to do it is because sometimes you build up a lot of speed from the first frames of dash attack (depending on the character) so it has the capacity to boost you a lot farther and catch your opponent.

It only exists in Brawl and 4 IIRC

In Brawl, yes, but it got patched out of Smash 4 (i think before the Wii U release)

This YouTube channel has most of what you need.  I'd highly recommend watching their videos if you want to get a grasp on Melee.

it's been too late to get into competitive melee for 10 years because everyone who's in it is already better than you and always will be
again, my original post was a joke

also some thoughts: getting into melee nowadays, not like just playing with friends, is really stupid because the game is super old and 2 others have been out for a while

See this was ALWAYS my view on Melee, it's WAY too late to even try to play seriously. Like it would take many dedicated years to even become a somewhat known player and by then everyone you would've surpassed has probably gotten far further than they were. Like the game to me is fine, if you strictly enjoy competing and enter tournaments seriously for that reason it's fine, but unlike other e-sports in general, you almost can't get to the top level without 5+ years, Leffen is the only player that even comes to mind that's gone far further than anyone else in a "short" amount of time, and he's a rare case of someone being as good as he is with the time dedicated despite it being more than 5 years meaning normally you'd probably have to play like 7-8+.
