are you just gonna ignore this post
use reflectors (villager, Falco, fox, Mario, doc. Mario, R.O.B.) to get in deep, use characters with good spacing to ignore the disjointed hitbox and land a hit.

That's all I can really recommend since I don't have much trouble with disjointed hitbox, mostly since I use anime swordsmen myself

in other news, how can you counter guys with disjointed hitboxes/lots of ranged attacks (anime swordsmen, samus, etc.) with close-ranged dudes (mario bros., sonic, etc.) besides picking one of the various anime swordsmen at my disposal
for swordfighters:
use projectiles, try to bait the opponent to attack and dodge or shield because their attacks are somewhat laggy
note that smash 4 did not have budget for actual swords, so the disjoint is not as great as it should be for most characters

for projectile users:
you can use some faster reflectors to try to get in
otherwise, try to dodge and slowly advance on their space and either attack while they're in endlag from a projectile or catch them trying to escape

characters with stuff range usually have to make for it with speed (either in their frame data or their actual movement)

thanks for the tips in general, i'll try the things y'all suggested

anyone wanna play some wii u friendlies? nnid is Twilliam if you haven't added it, we'll chat in the gruppe chat

i can run melee time to rule both games

also anyone afraid of wavedashing i can do those on a keyboard within three minutes of playing via internet melee osmosis. granted i can only do one in a row and not reliably but still its a keyboard.

you don't have any controller for your computer?
dolphin natively supports the wii u gamecube adapter if you have it

wavedashing is e-z my friend

it's simple but getting it consistently every time and angling the control stick to control distance takes a little time to learn.  also when to apply a wd or not

balls up and get the mayflash usb to gamecube adapter for your PC.
then get 20XX, a mod for melee that plays the game at a more streamlined approach (no intro sequence, auto puts 4 stock no item matches and highlights the tourney legal maps)

both of my mayflash gamecube adapters broke relatively soon and were kinda unstable so i just recommend the wii u gamecube adapter since you can use it on smash 4 too
plus i imagine it works better with dolphin
(on the other hand, my mayflash classic controller adapter is perfectly stable and has worked for quite a while)

you could just use community netplay build (which has lagless FoD and a no-transform pokemon stadium, but maybe 20xx has it too i don't know) or the community netplay gecko code for the automatic settings
20xx has a lot of useful toggleable training features like random cpu DI/teching though so you should get it anyway

i have an adapter i just didnt feel like searching for it at 5 am

I have the mayflash wiiu/pc GameCube adapter and have had it since early last summer.  still works well, though for some reason dolphin recognizes one of the ports as having a permanently enabled c stick?

other than that it's still good.
