Games / Deriving unique games from blockland's emergent gameplay
« on: July 18, 2010, 02:14:46 PM »
I'd like to compile a list (on this post) and start a discussion of theoretical possibilities for games based on the different things which emerge on blockland servers.

Fortwars:  Fortwars has a basis of people getting into teams to build bases and fight others whom have their own bases.  While there are many games which follow a team based fort battling style, there are many unique aspects of fortwars.  The first is that there are many teams of varying sizes;  I'm not sure if that would be something desired to be in a unique game as it might lead to teams being too unbalanced, but it is interesting being able to join another's team or create your own, and allows for continuous gameplay without the need for rounds as new teams are constantly beginning while older teams fade off, all without needing a full round restart to re-balance team advantages.  Another advantage is that players build (and sometimes with the proper scripts, destroy) each other's bases.  While base building is a common aspect of the RTS genre, blockland forwar bases focus less on building the correct buildings to get certain upgrades, and much more on building a small defensible base with a secure spawning and equipping area; and easy access to allow the assault on enemy bases.  Themes for fortwars are commonly the same with modern weapons and a unstandardized base building theme.  I hosted with great success a pirate wars which was basically fort wars where people built their islands before then defending them and trying to raid other's islands.  One could imagine a game based on the fortwars formula to use any theme from medieval to African plains tribes.

Boss Battles: While the idea of boss battles is very very common among video games, there was a somewhat unique chain of servers which died off awhile ago.  The basic premise was that 4 players would fight one player (usually who is in a vehicle) who acted as a boss.  Each time they killed the boss they would progress to the next round where the boss would continue trying to kill them as many times as possible, or in a case where the players had to complete an objective other than kill the boss, keep them from completing that objective.  This might make an interesting party type game with several players competing against one player who controls the equivalent of what would be any computer controlled enemies in a normal game.

Can anyone think of other unique gameplay that emerges from Blockland that could possible make interesting games?  Any comments on my ideas?

Fyi this is in the games category because while it does talk about blockland, it's applying it's gameplay to the possibility of other games.

General Discussion / Two very handy yet unadvertised forum features
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:11:15 AM »
Ever wish you had a list of topics which you replied to or posted which has had other people reply to, or a list of the most recent posts?  Actually, the Blockland forums actually has such a feature!

http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?action=unreadreplies
This url will show any topic which you have posted in and has replies you haven't read yet.

http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?action=unread
This url shows the most recent posts you haven't read yet.

While there are no links for these handy forum features on the forums, they are fully functional.  Instead of having the Bl forums bookmarked in my browser, I have the new replies page bookmarked, so any time I wish to see what people have said in response to my posts, I can easily find out!

Hope this helps.

Games / Conquer on Contact - lets populate the game world!
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:26:02 AM »
Conquer on Contact is a very basic web browser game, though it has a very nice level of polish.
The basics of it are you have an army that you can move around, with tiles where you can increase the size of your army, tiles that decrease your army size but temporarily boost its power, and a few other tile types.

It's not that complicated or special, but seeing as there are currently three players on the board, I would like to see what a game with more people playing looks like.

No screen shot provided because you click the link and you're playing.  If you want to create an account it will let you do so with the army you started without an account.

Modification Help / max2dts download (solved)
« on: January 18, 2010, 02:12:43 PM »
Does anyone have downloads for max2dts and max2dts pro for max 2010?  I've looked all over the place, and it seems the only way to get a copy is by having TGE, which I don't.  I did find a download for a bunch of different versions of 3dsmax, but the latest version they had was 9, which doesn't do any good for me.  Any help on this matter would be great.

Edit: I think I finally found a download.

Off Topic / web hosting recommendations?
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:07:13 PM »
Lately I've started to want to have a website again.  I previously had a venture having a payed host, but I ended up not using it at all, and with little web design skills, it was fairly pointless to continue paying for it.  Now I have developed my skills as a web designer much more, and have some practical uses for having a payed web host.  The question is, who to chose?

I would prefer a host that regards the customer with having more knowledge than the average host does.  I can easily install my own software on the server, and don't want to be pestered by stuff that is helpful for the average know little.  So I guess I want a host that says "this is your alloted bandwidth, this is your space, don't overload our servers or do anything illegal, I'm not going to charge you for a bunch of stuff you won't ever use, now run along and have fun."

So I guess that and price are my two factors.  Any suggestions?

Edit: Oh, and bonus points for services that give you a cheep start before paying full price.

Would be cool if I could turn it off and just play the game I like to play.

I do note that allot of the problems seem to somehow involve the origin (0,0,0).

If you're wondering, the first one was taken on Wallet's server awhile ago when Bl didn't decide to totally break on me.  The rest were just taken on Badspot's server.

... shaped paper weight.

Hard-drive is failing.  It currently is failing to start-up.  With what I've dug up through google's help is that I may be able to recover some of it, but it basically is all going to hell.

Any advice on buying a new hard-drive?

Drama / People who complain Blockland is getting worse
« on: March 27, 2009, 01:07:48 AM »
Seriously, I've been hearing that comment ever since I started actively playing Blockland again (as I wasn't involved with the community before then, but my guess is that people were saying it then too.) If every time someone has brought this up, and many people agreed it was true, it was true, by now all builds would consist of 3 2by4s, and no posts in the forums would be legible enough to read.  Sure, this is does happen, but it is not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

I think people need to think about the improvements in the game more often then they do.  In the version I first played you'd pick up the bricks you wanted to use from a small pile, and have to build on the baseplates that are a part of the map, now we have wrench events and physics, something that wouldn't have been dreamt of by the builders who got mad while some random person came into the server and destroyed their several hour's work with a hammer and couldn't do much to stop them.

Come up with something that is older news then the post above, and still relating to it.  Don't jump too far back, or else it will run dry quickly.

Example:
-Spore Sucked
-Spore came out
-Spore is coming out
-There is a game in works called Spore
-There is a guy called Will Write (spelling?), he makes games.

Here is the start:

Hey guys, did you hear about the new update for Blockland, it has physics!
