what's the deal with this
you're saying melee isn't good, others are saying melee is good
how is it in your eyes a problem that melee is being defended when it's not a problem you're attacking it
i was trying to say that people need to stop playing melee exclusively, shunning the others, and acting like it's a godsend of a game but i got into a rant instead

i'm fairly sure people only cling onto melee because they're afraid to step off
pretty sure like 70% of the melee playerbase started playing after the melee documentary in 2013. your argument doesnt account for melees insane growth

this is a huge problem with the melee 'community'
smash 4 and brawl are completely different games
they're not trying to be melee
if you want a clone of melee in each release, you're going to end up with a call of duty-esque franchise
i dont want smash 4 or brawl to be like melee. melee is fine. but you are arguing that melee players should just move on to the new games, and now in the same breath you're admitting that they're completely different games. these are conflicting ideas friendo

also JS if PM came out instead of brawl, i think melee would be completely dead because on its surface its just better melee

but why do i bother trying to argue against melee in this melee-hugbox of a thread? i don't even know that myself
im not even contesting with you because i play melee, even the biggest melee hater in the world would realize that melee is growing and is bigger than ever. youre asserting your opinion about something you know nothing about
i was trying to say that people need to stop playing melee exclusively,
literally why. its called preference
shunning the others,
no one should shun anyone. sure. i already admitted there is elitism in the melee community
and acting like it's a godsend of a game
id argue its one of the best games to ever come out. its like accidentally an amazing fighting game and the most sold gamecube game ever
but i got into a rant instead

limited character choice, super old, newer releases

To all of these, I could say Marvel vs. Capcom 2. There's not a lot of team variety at the high level, but it survived over 10 years just because it's a great game. I wish I knew more about it but it's not really my cup of tea to actually play, so I don't know anything about the scene really

i give melee 1 year max before it goes out of style
honestly if people are still clinging on to this game in 2017 i'll attempt to eat a hat

I'll hold you to that. Just kidding though, I'd probably forget by then.

expected replies: but the DEPTH eh so COMPETITIVE

But... that's why people are playing it competitively because of its depth and competitiveness? That's what makes a good competitive game.
I think even the 64 scene is bigger than the Brawl scene now because 4 came out and 64 has just been slowly growing anyway cuz it's a good forgetin' game and is different than all the others. But Smash 4 is almost like a Brawl 2.0 kind of situation, so...

i'm fairly sure people only cling onto melee because they're afraid to step off

i'm fairly sure you're stupid
and what would make someone afraid to step off melee? there's always the other 3 smash games to play

this is a huge problem with the melee 'community'
smash 4 and brawl are completely different games
they're not trying to be melee

Okay, and now you defeat your own point. Why would we move on to a different game if we like the older one? Especially when the new games are, as you said, completely different.

if you want a clone of melee in each release, you're going to end up with a call of duty-esque franchise

A clone of melee with more characters, better balance (cough: project m), and probably some small mechanics tweaks would actually be pretty nice, IMO.
The thing is though, you realize that you could really easily call Smash 4 a Brawl clone?
They feel very similar. The major differences are in ledge Annoying Orangeing, shieldstun, no chaingrabs, and no hitstun cancelling, but overall the game is still very Brawl. There's still barely any combos unless you play the best characters (or play a character that use one move a bunch to combo), the gameplay is pretty heavily defensive, there's multiple airdodges in the air (which you can do even faster now, i might add), there's still ledge-snapping, there's still not a lot of movement options, etc. The characters fall a little faster, but not a lot.

but why do i bother trying to argue against melee in this melee-hugbox of a thread? i don't even know that myself

and what would make someone afraid to step off melee? there's always the other 3 smash games to play
don't most high-level players also play smash 4

don't most high-level players also play smash 4
the ones who do afaik are ZeRo and M2K

Confused with the arguing going on in this thread lol. Not even really sure how/why there is an argument. But since I'm back I'd like to state something to ulti, you aren't right about needing 4+ years for most e-sports. Actually it's usually far less except in cases similar to Melee where it's been out so long. In fact you could probably pick up LoL now and get just as good with the same dedication in like 2 years as you'd need for Melee as some of the pros (mainly because Melee is A LOT of muscle memory before you can even begin to start your journey). That's not to say you'd make a team, making a name for yourself in most e-sports is the problem, not the skill required.

don't most high-level players also play smash 4
not really

Nairo and Zero are the only top smash4 players worth mentioning and in melee there are like ~20 worth mentioning

i should add something to the op about the existential crCIA people have over being too late for melee and how its bullstuff just pick it up and play

if you like it competitive all of the important techs have heavy documentation that you can probably find by googling how to wavedash and ect and you can rapidly improve with some effort on your part

if you dont well its just not your stuff and you can always play casually

really though competitive melee is like all other games in that it is just a series of mindgames played out with the tools given and you can improve your tools and your mindgames by intentionally practicing or just playing the game with friends

melee tech arent some instant arthritis starcraft brood war to 11 level of apm stuff although extra high levels of play with certain characters do demand tight and quick inputs that can be learned via the magic of muscle memory and practicing for a few hours

competitive melee certainly isnt an impenetrable wall of ridiculously stupid inputs that need to be implemented perfectly throughout the match by players with at least 2000 apm to even have a chance of success especially at the lower levels ie college melee gatherings or some stuff

i dont actually know if this pertains to the conversation still but whatever

melee was good and i appreciate anyone who's still into it. it's proof that good games last a long while

now, the reason i don't still play it is because for someone like me, there is no reason to still be playing it.
i like fighting games, but i'm not the kind of person to ever go high level competitive. as for all the casual content, i've already experienced it all.

that being said, each game had a pretty decent share of different content for someone who's not hardcore competitive. although i didn't really like brawl.
i really liked melee and 4 though, for each their own reasons. melee seemed more solid in mechanics, me and my bro, and occasionally other friends, loved to just fight on temple.
4 has a lot of new experiences. i really don't like smash run/tour. but i like customizing miis, being able to play with more than 4 players, and doing all the other neat modes other than smash run/tour.
i really miss melee's break the targets though. this target blast thing actually isn't that good.

smash 4 will be the best game if they make marth good again

i like playing as marth in smash 4

i like playing as marth in smash 4

but then you play marth in not-smash 4 and he's so much better
