Off Topic / Attention Davy and friends of Davy
« on: October 14, 2012, 02:19:42 AM »
It appears Davy has had his Steam account compromised:

Do not click any links he sends you until he regains control of his account, and obviously do not visit the link in the image.

I thought I'd post this here publicly instead of just sending him a PM so as to try to notify others of this before someone else falls victim.

Off Topic / MIT has developed an autonomous robotic plane

Quote from: Video description
For decades, academic and industry researchers have been working on control algorithms for autonomous helicopters — robotic helicopters that pilot themselves, rather than requiring remote human guidance. Dozens of research teams have competed in a series of autonomous-helicopter challenges posed by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI); progress has been so rapid that the last two challenges have involved indoor navigation without the use of GPS.

But MIT's Robust Robotics Group — which fielded the team that won the last AUVSI contest — has set itself an even tougher challenge: developing autonomous-control algorithms for the indoor flight of GPS-denied airplanes. At the 2011 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), a team of researchers from the group described an algorithm for calculating a plane's trajectory; in 2012, at the same conference, they presented an algorithm for determining its "state" — its location, physical orientation, velocity and acceleration. Now, the MIT researchers have completed a series of flight tests in which an autonomous robotic plane running their state-estimation algorithm successfully threaded its way among pillars in the parking garage under MIT's Stata Center.

Off Topic / Error with changing avatar
« on: July 02, 2012, 08:29:31 PM »
I keep getting this error when I try to change my avatar, and I have no idea why:

What's the maximum file size for avatars? Everything about it is correct. It's a GIF, it's 75 x 75 pixels, and it's only 179 KB.

Does it have something to do with the fact that I'm using stuffty hotel Internet at the moment?

I know the Creativity board is supposed to be for topics about stuff you yourself made, but I felt like sharing this with you guys because I think quite a lot of you would enjoy it. I know I do.

Two of my very good friends have their own band, called "Ctrl-Shift-Awesome." They just released their first song, entitled "Surgery Song," over on their Bandcamp page and I'd really love it if you guys could go give it a listen, and download it (and even pay for it if you'd be so kind!), because they really deserve more recognition than they currently have.

Their Bandcamp page can be found here.

Tell your friends, tell your parents, tell your siblings, tell your neighbors, tell your dog, I don't care, just get them more recognition, please! I'd appreciate it quite a lot, and I know they would, too. And while you're at it, go like their Facebook page!

Here's a list of their current songs:

Off Topic / Porter Robinson - Language
« on: June 11, 2012, 02:05:37 PM »
I don't always make threads for single songs...

but when I do, they're about Porter Robinson's song, "Language."

no but seriously, I normally wouldn't make a thread for one single song. but this is an exception.

even if you don't like electronic music, I encourage you to listen to this, for at least one minute into the song. it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. skip to 2:58 for the vocals, if you wish.

without further ado, Language, by Porter Robinson.

and no it's not dubstep.

I'm going to make a loop of it right now.

Porter_Robinson_-_Language.ogg download.

put this in op, op.

Off Topic / Help with making GIFs run faster
« on: April 26, 2012, 09:18:19 AM »
I know the title is a bit weird so let me explain. I usually use Photoshop for my GIF work, such as my current avatar. The problem I've always had is that GIFs I make in Photoshop run slowly in any browser. They run just fine in Photoshop, I have the delay between frames set to 0 seconds, yet they still run slowly in browsers. I have tried so many programs to try and remedy this problem and none have helped.

I've seen smooth-running GIFs made with Photoshop though, so I think I'm doing something wrong, I just don't know what it is. Before you ask, no, I have not yet tried GIMP; I would try it right now but I can't install it on school computers and I don't get home until around 5:30 because of work.

What do you guys use to make your GIFs? Websites that place watermarks in the GIF such as gifsoup are unacceptable.

Games / Prototype 2 - PC version released!
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:18:05 AM »

Quote from: http://www.prototypegame.com
WELCOME TO NEW YORK ZERO

The sequel to Radical Entertainment’s best-selling open-world action game of 2009, PROTOTYPE® 2 takes the unsurpassed carnage of the original PROTOTYPE and continues the experience of becoming the ultimate shape-shifting weapon. You are Sgt James Heller, husband to a deceased wife and child and a soldier left simply to die.

As the game’s all-new infected protagonist, players will experience Sgt James Heller cutting a bloody swathe through the wastelands of post-viral New York Zero. Equipped with unparalleled new shapeshifting powers, players will gradually build a vast genetic arsenal of deadly new biological weapons and abilities as they hunt, kill and consume their way toward the ultimate goal – to kill…Alex…Mercer!

Are you ready to murder your maker?

essentially, this follows a similar story to inFamous, except that you don't have a choice between good/evil, you're always evil. you're infected with this thing called the Blacklight virus and it basically makes you god. you can survive falls from the tops of skyscrapers, you can transform your body into a living weapon of mass destruction, and you (kind of) eat people.

in case it wasn't already obvious, this game is bloody, gory, and violent as all loving hell. but it's still wickedly fun. I played the first game and I loved it, I can't wait to get this one.

available for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 for $50.
